Can We Register for Cash?

No really, can we? Shawn and I have been living together for a little over two years now, and we’ve accumulated a lot of stuff. Stuff we’ve been given, stuff we purchased ourselves, and stuff that just kinda showed up. When we got engaged, we realized that one of the bigger hurdles we’d face was registering for gifts. It’s probably the easiest and most fun part of wedding planning for a lot of people, but since we didn’t really do things in the “right” order, it’s kind of a challenge. Plus, I just get that weird feeling about making a list of gifts I’m “expecting” to get. I don’t expect anything, other than fun and well wishes at our wedding. But, back to my original point…

Here’s the thing – when we bought the condo, we got the necessities, and everything’s holding up pretty well. Now that we’re settled in and thinking longer-term, everything we need doesn’t really fit into the registry category. We are anxious to renovate the bathrooms, we need bedroom furniture (that overturned box as a nightstand is starting to mock me), and we’d like to install a microwave over the stove. Does Home Depot have a wedding registry?

bathroom-renovationNo doubt it’s in poor taste to request cash, but that’s really what we need. I read on Weddingbee about a Honeyfund, a wedding registry alternative where you register for activities (dinners, excursions, hotel fees) that you plan to on your honeymoon. I wish Ethan Allen or Jordan’s had a similar Furniturefund. Maybe I’ll write to them…

Don’t get me wrong, a few of our items could use an upgrade – we’re still using our dishes and towels from college, for example. While we recognize the thought and generosity that goes into buying a wedding gift and would feel incredibly grateful for receiving newer items for our home, there has got to be a tactful way to request financial assistance for other big ticket items.
